Do you spend a lot of time on the computer every day?
Wouldn’t it be great to have a hobby that isn’t just Facebook and could also make a few dollars on the side?
Well we have some great options!
1. Genealogy Researcher
There are now so many great websites around that make it easy for you to trace and find out all about your ancestors, where you come from and whether there were goodies, baddies or even Royalty in your family tree. You just never know who you might be related to! The thing is – there are also a load of people out there that don’t have the time and patience to do the research. If you are a good researcher, know your way around websites and have the time, why not do some paid work as a Genealogy Researcher?
What it Pays?
It is usually on a per hour basis. If you are a beginner, I think it is reasonable to charge $15/hour. As you get more experience under your belt – you could charge up to $150!
Costs to Set Up:
Well apart from your computer and internet connection (which I presume you will already have) – you will need a few subscriptions to the really popular Geneology websites – which have all the information you need. My pick is Ancestry.com (really easy to use – I use this myself!). It helps to do your own family tree first to get a feel for it – and go from there. Advertise your services on local Facebook Pages or practise on friends to get your skills up to scratch!
2. Start a Blog
Blogs can be a great legacy to leave for your children, or you can start one about something you are passionate about and potentially make an income from it. The best thing of all is that you don’t need any funds whatsoever to start one.
There are loads of free tools to start a blog – but my top suggestions would be:
If you want to start making money out of it – you’ll need a domain name – and upgrade to a paid model. Our picks:
There are also some really great books on how to learn to blog – these are my favourites:
Costs to set up: Nil
Cons: It does take time to build an audience, write articles and find your niche. But if you are just doing it as a hobby – it certainly can make you some money on the side.
3. Become a Pinterest Princess
I freaking love Pinterest. I’ve designed houses on their, furnished them. I have boards on swimsuits I like, how I want my backyard to look and fashion trends. Like Facebook, if people like what they see, they will follow you – and it is a fun job to sort through photographs and images, recipes and how-to’s in the Pinterest world – and grow your own little group of groupies.
Some great examples of Pinterest Princesses to follow include:
The best way to learn is to just wing it – but if you truly want to become a professional in the Pinterest world – here are some Pinterest Bibles for you!
How do you make money out of it?
Well it is a lot like a blog. Approach advertisers that sell products you love and start to promote them. Like a blog, advertisers will pay to get their products out there! There is also a chance you could do affiliate marketing on Pinterest (although they are constantly changing their rules) – that is – you promote other people’s products – and get a cut of the commission. I explain in more in detail below!
4. Become a Content Writer
Love to write? Why not write some content for either your own blog – or – write for online websites. There are even websites that ‘bid’ for a writer to write content for them now! Make sure your spelling and grammar are perfect, cite your sources and off you go.
You could write:
- Ghost write for novels
To sell your contact direct – just start messaging the odd website in the field of your speciality eg photography or farming etc.
If you want to do it on a more full-time basis – try these websites and bid for work:
A good content piece can go from as little as $5 up to $250.00! So if you are good at it – there is money to be made.
5. Make Youtube Videos
Youtube videos are HUGE at the moment. Ask any child between the ages of 6 and 10 and they will tell you all about Dan TDM and all the other popular Youtubers that talk crap about playing games on Youtube – and they literally get millions of dollars per year in revenue for doing it!
So think about what you are good at – makeup, nails, gaming, even organisation or fitting folded sheets. If you can do it – the world will want to see it.
How to go about it?
Start your own Youtube Channel (it’s free) – make a video (at first, just use your phone or computer to make small videos) – plus there are loads of Youtube Videos on how to make Youtube Videos lol. Find your niche – and off you go!
How do you make money out of it?
A few ways really. If you get over a certain amount of views, Youtube will pay you for your content. You can put ads on your videos (you know those annoying ads that you can’t scroll past before viewing what you want?). Plus as you get a big following – you can have advertisers pay you to promote or use their products.
Great Youtubers to follow:
- Jenna Marbles
- Hola Soy German
- Pew Die Pie
6. Get Paid to Be a Facebook Page Moderator
With so many blogs and businesses nowdays running Facebook Pages, not a lot of them have the time to watch the page and interact with their customers. That’s where YOU come in. If you love Facebook, love a brand and have the time, why not apply to that business to moderate their Facebook Page for them? Even Stay at Home Mum employs Facebook Moderators to help us!
What it Pays:
It all depends. Some of the larger businesses have ‘volunteers’ that do this for the love of it. We kinda think that is shit. Facebook Mods should be paid a flat hourly fee from $15 – $25/hour depending on how busy the page is.
How to do it?
Find the ‘contact’ section of the place you want to work for – and send a resume and why you would make a good fit!
7. Online Surveys
Unfortunately for some, there are loads of spammy surveys that have ruined it for the rest of us. But there are still a few out there that although don’t pay a lot – still pay you something for your time. And they can be really fun. After all, who doesn’t love to give their own opinion and get paid for it at the same time!
Here are some great examples of non-spam (they will actually pay you) surveys:
